What is

Basal metabolic rate

Someone’s basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the minimum amount of calories that someone’s body requires to function. This number of calories is necessary to support bodily processes like blood circulation, breathing, and body temperature. BMR is the most important source of energy for the body, making up 60 to 70 percent of the total energy the body needs. There are several different things that can impact BMR, including:
Body size
Amount of fat
Amount of lean muscle
Age
Race
Sex
Genetics

Your BMR can also be affected by fasting, illness, medication, temperature, thyroid hormone levels, pregnancy, and more.

Everybody’s BMR is unique, and there is not a single standard “BMR” that someone should target. However, the average male BMR is 1,696 calories, and the average female BMR is 1,410 calories.

You can’t really change your BMR, as BMR relies heavily on unmodifiable factors such as age, height, and genetics.  However, you can increase your BMR by building lean muscle mass through routine strength and resistance training.
