Shen AI’s core technology

Here’s the science behind Shen AI: it uses rPPG technology – and your body’s own intricate vasculature. Underneath the skin are many tiny blood vessels through which blood pumps. As a result, the blood volume in these vessels changes, corresponding to subtle color fluctuations in the skin. Although these fluctuations are invisible to the naked eye, rPPG can detect these changes remotely via a camera.

To ensure that Shen AI works for everyone, the team developed Multi Tonal Sensing Technology. This technology, unique to Shen AI, is an advanced computer vision algorithm that ensures the following:

  • Inclusivity for all skin tones. That’s right – Shen AI works for everyone across Fitzpatrick scale 1 through 6 with the same level of accuracy.
  • Reliability in different environments. The Multi Tonal Sensing technology has a high tolerance for varied lighting conditions, meaning it doesn’t require bright lights for measurement. Thus, it helps to maintain accuracy across diverse lighting conditions.
  • Enhanced accuracy. Multi Tonal Sensing increases measurement precision by as many as four times, even in challenging conditions.
  • Global accessibility. It expands camera-based health monitoring to diverse populations worldwide, removing traditional barriers.

Finally, anyone familiar with AI knows that the technology is only as good as the data it learns from. That’s why Shen AI was trained on 50,000 video recordings and 7 million heartbeats, a dataset we ensured was ethnically and geographically diverse. Thus, Shen AI is inclusive of various regions and ethnicities, increasing the accuracy and precision with which we approach medicine and promoting more equitable patient care.

Validated in the clinic

While AI health monitoring certainly works, how does Shen AI measure up to traditional devices in the real world? Well, a clinical study conducted by the Medical University of Wroclaw showed that Shen AI is just as accurate as contact-based devices and ECG when measuring things like heart rate, breathing rate, and HRV.

Additionally, another study by ACHA assessed the accuracy of several rPPG solutions, including Shen AI. Results indicated that Shen AI had greater accuracy in detecting heart rate, systolic, and diastolic blood pressure measurements when compared to its competitors (1). As such, Shen AI has become a leader in the rPPG space with its superior performance in accuracy, inclusivity, and environmental adaptability.
