What is

Ischemic heart disease

Ischemia occurs when blood flow and oxygen is restricted in part of the body. With cardiac ischemia, blood flow and oxygen to the heart muscle is decreased. This is also known as ischemic heart disease.

Ischemic heart disease is also referred to as coronary artery disease and coronary heart disease. It happens when the arteries become narrowed, so less blood and oxygen are able to get to the heart muscle. In serious cases, this can cause a heart attack. It can also cause angina pectoris, which is chest pain and discomfort, as well as:

Upper body pain

Shortness of breath

Indigestion

Sweating

Nausea or vomiting

Lightheadedness or dizziness

Fast or irregular heartbeat

Healthcare professionals may treat ischemic heart disease with medications, procedures, or surgery. Lifestyle modifications, like exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, a nutritious diet, and stopping smoking can all help to reduce one’s risk of ischemia.
