What is

Total cardiovascular mortality

Someone’s total cardiovascular mortality is a combined assessment of multiple heart health risks over time. It considers the probability that someone will die from a cardiovascular-related cause over a specific period of time, such as within the next 10 years or within someone’s lifetime.

For example, if someone has a 20% 10-year total cardiovascular mortality risk, that means there is a 20% chance that they will die due to a cardiovascular event (e.g., stroke or heart attack) within the next 10 years.  Someone’s risk will consider things like:

Age and sex

Blood pressure

Cholesterol levels

History of diabetes

Obesity

Lifestyle (e.g., diet, physical activity, stress)

Smoking history

Family medical history
